Marriage

Marriage is a great Mystery, as Ap. Paul says, therefore it must not be broken. “What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Mat. 19, 4-6). The necessary for the Marriage permission are:

a) Certificate of Baptism
b) Certificate of celibacy from the Priest of the Parish in which they live during the last three years for the ones about to be married.
c) An affirmation from the Priest of the Parish that there is no close blood relationship between the ones about to be married, especially when they have the same surname.
d) Out of necessity and by dispensation the Church permits the marriage between Orthodox and non-Orthodox Christians. However the non Orthodox person must have been baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity and to sign an affirmation that the children who will be born will be baptized in the Orthodox Church. It is not allowed in the service of the Orthodox Marriage to participate non-Orthodox Priests or Coumbaroi (Best Man).
e) If out of necessity reasons a civil marriage should be done, then it must be done immediately the religious one as well, provided that the ones about to be baptized are Orthodox Christians.
f) The so-called marriage between persons of the same sex is incompatible with the Orthodox faithful. And the tradition of our Church.
g) Marriages are not permitted:

  • From the 12th of December till Christmas.
  • From Clean Monday (beginning of Great Lent) till Easter.
  • From the 1st till the 15th of August.
  • On the 29th of August, the Feast of Saint John the Baptist.
  • On the 14th of September, Feast of the Precious Cross and
  • On the 5 of January, Day before Theophania.
