Christening

It is one of the Mysteries of the Church. It is officiated by the Bishop or the Priest,
who has to be canonical and belong to one of the Autocephalous Orthodox Churches.
With Baptism we are redeemed from the original sin as well as from every personal sin
and we are transferred from the kingdom of darkness to the Kingdom of light. Every child
that is baptized must have one sponsor (not a lot), who must be an Orthodox Christian
not younger than 12 years old. Also the child should receive just one Christian name, so to
have his patron Saint and to celebrate in his memory. If a heterodox would like to become
Orthodox he is accepted by the holy Chrism, provided that he is baptized in the name of
the Holy Trinity. Otherwise he is re- baptized. Anyway it is on the judgment of the
Archbishop to decide what has to be done in each case. After the holy Baptism or Chrism
is given to the neophyte or to his parents the Baptism certificate.

The necessary for the Baptism permission are:
a) Certificate of Birth of child.
b) Certificate of Baptism of sponsor.
c) Consent of both parents.
d) Application.

In order to issue the Metropolitan Permission, these documents are needed :
1 Application form signed by the child’s two parents, provided by Holy Metropolis.
2 Original Certification of Birth
3 Original Certification of godparent’s Orthodox Baptism and ID
4 Original Parent’s ID
5 Metropolis’ fee NZ$300
