The Holy Metropolis of New Zealand was founded in 1970 by our Ecumenical Patriarchate. Specifically, it was detached from the then Holy Archdiocese of Australia and originally included the four present-day missionary Metropolises of New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Korea.

Today, it consists of the country of New Zealand and the Pacific Ocean island nations of Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. It was settled by His Eminence Metropolitan Dionysios, His Eminence the current Metropolitan of Proiconissos, Mr. Joseph, and the former Metropolitan of Gano and Chora, Mr. Amphilochios. With the blessing of our Ecumenical Patriarchate, in 2006 the missionary work on the islands was started by His Eminence Metropolitan Amphilochios. Six altars, four indigenous priests, an orphanage and about seven hundred baptized souls were established and together with the five thousand Greeks of New Zealand, they now constitute our flock. The headquarters of the Metropolis is in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.
